Lights Enters A6 Era With A Nostalgic Glow

story by editor-in-chief: Ashly Nicole

Lights is often known for her edgy synth beats and sparkling pop sound, and this new era of her music is no different, but in the best way. We’ve seen our girl go through so many music evolutions, try different sounds and aesthetics, and even make callbacks to her roots on occasion, and every single version of Lights’ music has been nothing short of a masterpiece.

On May 2nd, Lights released her 6th album to the world, A6. It’s a perfect mix of new sounds, comfortable and familiar melodies, and callbacks from the very beginning, drawing in both new and old fans alike. When asked what A6 the album and the era mean to her, Lights has expressed during her A6 tour and other interviews that, “A6 is an airport gate number, a music note, a highway exit, it’s something you see everywhere….. A6 is exactly what it says it is: Album Six. In this landscape I realize it’s a flex to make it this far doing what you love… I’ve given most of my years to the creation of something beautiful and affirming and transportive.” But she didn’t stop there; in an interview she added a poetic layer to the name: “Past lessons, grief and loss, personal growth in a world that wants you to stay the same… It’s everything you’d write down in a small A6‑sized journal because saying it out loud is often somehow harder.” amplifymusicmag.com

So, A6 is both a literal nod to being her sixth full-length album and a metaphorical connection to the intimate, journal-like reflections that shape its themes.

Recently Lights completed the first leg of her A6 tour, traveling across North America, playing more intimate venues, continuing to do meet and greets, and even participating in long time fan’s proposals!! Lights is truly her fans biggest fan.
We had a chance to attend not only Lights’ A6 pop up in Los Angeles, where she previewed 5 new songs for us (Damage, Alive Again, Surface Tension, White Paper Palm Trees, and Clingy), but we had the wonderful privilege of covering her A6 tour stop in LA as well, at The Roxy. The show was completely sold out, and the room was filled with newer fans, veteran Lights Army, and everyone in between. She really made sure this show was filled with something for every person in the room, playing songs from the very first EP, to songs she’s released with other artists, and lots of new jams off of A6, making this sort of her own eras tour, if you will.

She intro’d the set with Day Two”, a nod and sequel of her song “Day One” from her second album, Siberia, and came out full energy to an ecstatic crowd to begin the set with her new song and first single off of A6, Damage”. Lights played so many nostalgic songs, there’s no doubt that at one point, there was not a single dry eye in the building; she even played a medley of some of her most nostalgic songs, really hitting those feels for any long time fan of hers, this medley included, Saviour, Drive My Soul, and Second Go, all such huge fan favorites.
She spent so much of the show not only giving it her all with her vocals and stage presence, but interacting with the audience, and really making sure every single person felt like they belonged. It was truly such a magical night, and no doubt this entire tour felt the same every single show.

Lights is currently on her second run of the A6 tour, calling it A6 Summer, and we are totally here for it. Make sure to catch Lights in a city near you if you can, you’ll only regret it if you don’t! And make sure to be on the look out for more tour and festival dates from her in the future.
Happy A6 Summer!!
